Howell's first Black resident. An escaped slave from Kentucky headed for freedom in Canada, who found his home in Howell. His love for Howell and Howell's love for Abe lead him back to Kentucky after the Civil War to bring his family home to Howell. Abe and his family were beloved bu the community and known as the most loved residents of Livingston County (archived obituary).
50 years prior to Jackie Robinson George Jewett broke through the racial barriers of sports. He was known as one of the greats and even mentioned as the greatest of his time by John Heisman (Heisman trophy). Howell's first Varsity Football Coach, First black Big Ten football player at both the University of Michigan and Northwestern. Today Michigan and Northwestern play for the annual George Jewett Trophy.
A Howell Valedictorian graduate, an honored and respected Howell resident, and an American Music Vanguard. Lulu's impact on Music, Civil Rights and ties to Martin Luther Kings famous speech. Today the Howard University in Washington DC named the Music Building the LuLu Vere Childers Hall.
